Through the process of evolution a large diversity of organisms and ecosystems have arisen. Biodiversity: the differences in living things in an ecosystem. Increased biodiversity increases the stability of the ecosystem. The reason for the increase in stability is that it provides for more genetic variation among species. Having a large diversity of species increases the chance that at some living things will survive when there are large changes in the environment.
