Cell Organelles

Cells have unique structures that perform specific jobs.

Organelles = cell structures that perform specific work of the cell.

-are formed from different molecules.

Functions that the organelles carry out are: transport of materials, energy capture and release,

protein building, waste disposal, information storage.

Single celled organisms have organelles that are similar to more complex organisms to complete their life processes.

Enzymes: needed for chemical reactions that are involved in cellular life processes.

"A Typical Animal Cell"

Nucleus- control center of the cell, has DNA, (DNA directs synthesis of proteins by the cell).

Mitochondrion- carries on cell respiration, converts glucose to ATP energy the cell can use.

Endoplasmic Reticulum- transport channels within the cell.

Ribosome- located on the endo. reticulum, and free in the cell, carries out synthesis of proteins for the cell.

Cell Membrane- Selectively regulates the materials moving to and from the cell.

Food Vacuole- Stores and digests food.

Contractile Vacuole- Pumps out wastes and excess water from the cell.

Chloroplast- found in plant cells and algae, carry out the process of photosynthesis.

Cell Wall- surrounds and supports plant cells
