Function: separation of the cell from the outside environment, control which molecules enter or

leave the cell, reconginition of chemical signals.

Membrane has 2 layers = phospholipids with embedded proteins in the layers

The surface of the membrane has molecules that recognize certain molecules which can attach or enter the cell.
