| Sexual Reproduction Process | |||||
| Sexual reproduction involves two parents. Each parent contributes one gamete or sex cell in reproduction. Each gamete will represent genetic information from both parents. The female gamete - ovum The male gamete - sperm
Both the ovum and the sperm are made in reproductive structures - Gonads The sperm is very small in comparison to the egg. The sperm is motile and uses a tail like structure (flagellum) to move. The sperm and the egg form as one in a process called fertilization. Once united it forms a Zygote, which has the complete genetic info. for a new organism. This new organism will have characteristics of both parents. After fertilization the zygote will divide by mitosis. This division will form the specialized cells, tissues, and organs of the organism. When the zygote differentiates into these specialized cells = Differentiation.
